Right, I’ll get straight to the point. As of 1st July, I am no longer a part of the Symphony Team. Before gasping, celebrating and/or converting to a new religion, this is a lot less dramatic than it might seem. Let us back peddle for a moment.

In a bid to break free from prospects of becoming “yet another University moulded undergraduate with too much interest in programming Java”, around 2004 Allen and myself started a project that would ultimately evolve into Symphony as we know it today. It was a new experience, a great adventure. We paid ourselves very little to begin with and learnt many lessons the hard way. On the verge of throwing in the towel, 2 years ago Airlock snapped us up and funded the development efforts, giving us the resources to fully realise Symphony as a serious development platform.

And 6 years on from when we started, Symphony has grown into what I believe to be an incredibly powerful and flexible system, the envy of the CMS world (even if they don’t all know it yet!). I am incredibly happy to have been a part of it, even more so since my name will forever be linked to such a wonderful application. However, life is tugging me in a different direction, one I cannot ignore, and I am ready for the next challenge. It is time for me to move on.

So, what does that mean for the Symphony community and further Symphony development. In the short term, at least, I am still going to be actively involved in development, albeit in a more freelance style capacity. Symphony 3 still requires a lot of my involvement (the bug list Craig kindly put together is a testament to that fact) and I will be sticking around to ensure the transition is smooth and the team can carry on without me.

For now, it’s really just business as usual.

Alistair, thanks for all your hard work and good luck for the future!
What are your plans without Symphony?

I am very sad that you are leaving, Alistair. It is indeed much more than just your name which is forever linked to Symphony.

All the best for you and your future plans!

I can only second my predecessors… Alistair, thanks a lot for all your work and good luck for your future.

Mr Kearney, we salute you.

I knew you it! You are a sentient entity on a much higher intellectual level than us humans, more akin to Delphinidae. I suppose you’ll be exploring much more interesting destinations across this galaxy.

Thanks, Alistair. You may have saved the human species by building Symphony.

Vielen Dank & alles Gute! Thanks & all the best!

Alistair, you will be missed man! Thanks so much for all your effort. We are so grateful for you! All the best to you!

Alistair, I must say I’m a little disappointed by this, what you’ve produced for the Symphonians over the last 5 or 6 years has been so impressive its going to be hard to imagine it without you. I hope for the sake of Symphony that things continue to improve but its sad to see you wont have the control you once had. But on a lighter note, thanks for all the hard work, intelligent, considered help you’ve given us all and best of luck with whatever the future holds. You will genuinely be missed. Sláinte

Perhaps we can persuade you to stay on with an advisory role on a Working Group…?

I believe that is indeed the case, Nick. Alistair will remain in the core working group.
