You knew something big was coming.
When you read that birds were falling from the skies by the hundreds and that Symphony's birthplace had been inundated by biblical floods, you could be forgiven for thinking that the end of days might be upon us.
Silly rabbit.
No, it's much bigger than that ;) After weeks and weeks of endless toil by Symphony's community working groups, we're pleased to announce Symphony 2.2 beta.
Please refrain from shouting or leaping in the air—such behavior would be inappropriate for a beta release. You may, however, nod, raise a glass, murmur approvingly, or applaud at a moderate volume.
Now, because you've resolved to spend 2011 hunched over your computer, ignoring your loved ones and eating day-old takeout, here's how you can help:
Get It
You can either Download the zip, or clone the integration branch of the Symphony repo:
git clone --branch integration git://github.com/symphonycms/symphony-2.git
If you want to test the default workspace, make sure to clone that integration branch too:
git clone --branch integration git://github.com/symphonycms/workspace.git
Test It
Users can...
- try installing a fresh copy
- try upgrading an existing installation
- create new sections, pages, data sources, and so on
- try using the new email gateways (beta docs)
Developers can...
- read through the nearly fully-documented core classes :)
- test some of the 40+ new delegates
- test your extensions
- experiment with the new email API (beta docs)
Report Issues
It's a beta. There will be problems. When you find them, point at them and shout.
Say Thanks
This is the most community-driven release of Symphony ever. If you're among the many who pitched in, pat yourself on the back—you've been heroic. If you weren't able to help this time around, try to say thanks to all the committers and contributers who made this release possible. (They're all rather insecure and starving for affirmation).

Great news! I think the links to the email gateway/API beta docs are broken, though.
I think the repo is private on Github. Also be sure not to install this on a live site. This is a beta, pre Release Candidate!
Whee!
Is that noise ok?
On another note, to initialise the submodules (extensions) automatically on clone, use this command instead:
This saves having to run
After the clone.
Got that wrong, it’s
git clone —branch integration —recursive git://github.com/symphonycms/symphony-2.git
Updated the Email API doc links.
Wow, the code documentation really is something to behold. Excellent work guys!
Excellent!
Team, u rock!
Craig, do we already have a public list of changes that could be linked here?
That is good news indeed! Thanks for all the hard work so far!
Awesome! Thanks so much guys…
Thank You, heroes and heroines, if any.
After moderate applause and gay whistles it now enters drumroll stage until changelog is released.
:)
To get a sense of the amount of changes between Symphony 2.1.2 and 2.2beta have a look at GitHub’s compare view: https://github.com/symphonycms/symphony-2/compare/master…integration.
Many thanks from my IDE and me for the DocBlocks! :)
Thank Brendan for this. It’s an amazing feat. We’ve got online API docs coming shortly after the 2.2 release too!
Thanks :-)
Even github thinks this is a big update:
Thanks for the effort
Wow! It was a good day for me to come back and check the project’s progress. Thanks all for your hard work. I can’t wait to get my hands dirty :)
