I'm trying to get the associated ID for the entry to which my new field is attached.

What method is used to grab the 'entry_id' of the currently created Entry in order to use it for further processing?

I know $this->get('id') gets the field ID, but how can I retrieve the 'Entry' ID.

Entry ID is passed along in the processing function for the field.

However, if further processing is not really field related (a.k.a. the field needs it internally), I suggest your extension should listen to EntryPostEdit and EntryPostCreate delegates and put your custom code there.
