Are there any other alternatives I should be considering?
Nope. Reflection field is the solution.

I've done some cursory looking and it appears that sorting a datasource by a Select Box Link isn't really possible except to essentially duplicate that data as another Text field or Reflection field or something.
Are there any other alternatives I should be considering? Thanks,
