Has something replaced this or is it just another extension that's fallen through the cracks?
Not that I'm aware of. Limited developers and time, I guess.

There is an open ticket on the Symphony repo, #2173 for XSRF. Simply, it doesn't work on the Frontend due to having to create a session for each request.

Couple of (minor) open issues haven't been acknowledged from August and the version isn't up to date with the core - just thought I'd check as I know there was a lot of discussion surrounding the XSRF stuff and wasn't sure if this is now handled differently.
