Is there a way to change and existing field type in a section to a different type?

For example. I have a Select Box field type that I'd like to now be a Tag List field type. Is there something I can do to the database to make that happen? I tried editing he SQL and changing the field type to taglist and it works fine in every area, however, when I edit said section I get a PHP error stating that something is looking for an array.

Obviously there's something else that needs to change too. Has anyone tried to do this before and gotten it to work?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
