I installed the default theme of Symphony a few days ago and noticed that comments added to an article aren't counted - the xml always shows comments="0", even if comments exist for that entry. Has anyone else come across this problem and found a way to work around it?

I've come across this, yes. Alistair patched this bug in Symphony, but I forget whether it was a bug with the Symphony core itself or the Select Box Link extension.

What version of Symphony are you using? Version 2.0.2 is around the corner, which should have this fix included.

I'm using version 2.0.1.

... and just updated to 2.0.2 – everything is working now. Thanks!

To avoid confusion: You are using code from Symphony's integration branch. 2.0.2 has yet to be released :)

So which version includes the fix to this?

Nick wasn't sure if it was a Symphony or an extension bug so we updated both.

You could try if an update of the extension is sufficient. Just grab version 1.8 on GitHub. Otherwise you could try downloading Symphony's integration branch from GitHub which represents the future 2.0.2 release.
