Had a quick look around, couldn't find anything, but a simple question:

If I wanted to submit/create multiple entries with one event, is this possible out-of-the-box?

i.e. several fieldsets with fields[name][], rather than a single one with fields[name]

The above produces a 'string expected, but array given' error - is there a way to achieve this easily?

This is for a form that has a fieldset (handled by its own event) that the user can 'duplicate' indefinitely.

Just select the Allow multiple filter in event edit page.

Oh, how embarrassing :p Thanks!
