The Members extension is your best bet if you're not already using this. It provides the complete package for membership and by setting up Roles and assigning users to those roles you can either allow or restrict access to certain pages of your site. You'll be able to configure your Roles via the CP when you have the extension installed. All other parts of the extension for Registration or Login etc, are well documented in the Wiki so take it one step a a time and look through the Wiki as you're going for reference. If you get stuck on any particular parts then just post back with the details. :)
