Hello,
is it possibile to use the system:created value for ordering articles in the admin, or should I add a custom date field, populated with the current date? And, if I use the latter, is it updated on article modification?

From the top of my head: Can you try appending ?sort=system:date&order=desc to the Admin URL? It must be something like this…

You could give system dates field a try - it's the perfect match for publish table sorting and does include separate "created" and "modified"-dates.

@Manaus was asking for a possibility in the admin area (backend). If I am not mistaken, the extension that you mentioned is for the frontend.

The extension allows the dates to be exposed in the backend via the field, so it allows sorting :)
