I’ve just installed XAMPP 1.7.1 on an XP virtual machine. Downloaded Symphony 2.0.2 from the site, installed and everything seems fine. The {$workspace} variable is reporting correctly.

Have you made any changes to your .htaccess files or Apache config? They would seem to be the first things to check.

I have changed the Apache-config. It says

<VirtualHost *:80>
ServerName symphony.localhost:80
DocumentRoot "C:/Program Files (x86)/xampp/htdocs/symphony"
<Directory "C:/Program Files (x86)/xampp/htdocs/symphony">
    Options +Includes
    AllowOverride All
</Directory>
</VirtualHost>

That should be it I guess

Version 2.0.4 fixed it for me.
