I think this behavior should be included out of the box, together with a visual indication whether the publish menu can drop down such as an icon. Simple yet effective, good stuff!

Don't Drop updated to version 1.2 on 26th of August 2010

version 1.2 still has 1.1 extension driver and thus displays 1.1 as version
