Cannot access "/archive" or /rss" paths

fixed had to enable mod rewrite using “sudo a2enmod rewrite”

I have gone thru default installation for Symphony on Ubuntu 10.10 . I have url http://localhost/Symphony/ which is accessible. But not any OOB posts or archive link.
I have made sure AllowOverride is set to “All”, I am not sure whats going on. Also I am unable to access Admin page.
is there a way to find out whats going on.
Not sure if this matters, I have had older installation of codeigniter as well which works fine with deeper links or urls
