Just wonder can Symphony be made to use Mongodb instead or alongside Mysql?

Nope. Symphony's core and its extensions rely on the concepts of table relationships, so document-based schemas are not supported.

That said, if you had a particular requirement to store information in MongoDB as well (with Symphony and the frontend still running off MySQL) you could always create an extension that would listen for the EntryCreate/Edit delegates and with your callbacks you could interact with MongoDB however you wanted.
