Include a count of entries in associated sections question

If you have two sections, for example Articles and Comments, that are linked with a select box link field in the comments section, when you grab Articles through a data source the entry element in the XML should have a comments attribute:
<entry id="1" comments="2">...

I have one section which I want to count. Maybe it is better to use the pagination as included element.

When I enable this where can I find the count of the entries. I looked several times in the xml and the param section but I can't find it.
