I need to build a site that only allows authors to view/edit/delete their own content. I looked into the 'author roles' extension but that only restricts the type of sections that individual authors have access to. I was wondering if anyone has any recommendations?

It looks like I was confusing 'Authors' with 'Author Roles'. I looked more closely at 'Author Roles', and it looks to suit my needs perfectly.

Does anyone know if there is a way to hide the 'System' menu?

System has Authors in it which all authors need access to for their own accounts, so not really no.

You could have a look through the code of Author Roles and see how things are done if you really want to do it.
