I have a site with Symphony 2.3.1 installed. When I hit the URL http://www.site.com/somepage/thisdoesnotexist, it redirects to the 404 page I set up correctly. However when I hit http://www.site.com/thispagedoesnotexist it merely redirects me to the landing page http://www.site.com/ and produces no 404 error. I have the standard .htaccess file - what can I look for to correct this behaviour?

Could you explain briefly what extensions you have installed?

It could be the case that you happen to have some sort of catch-all on the homepage; I don't have 2.3.1 installed currently so cannot verify. However I've usually worked with setups where I wanted some parameters with the home-page. Having your data-source not issue 404 in that scenario could also lead to your problem.

If there is a parameter and data source using it, then the DS will need the redirect to 404 option setting for when that parameter yields no results
