Description

Cheap and big, Dreamhost is a great host for projects that don’t need lots of resources, or users who are just starting out.

I’ve been using them for years. Lots of space, bandwidth and options for very low price. Uptime is not too bad, but I think they tend to oversell. More than adequate for a personal or portfolio site.

Pros:

  • Low price
  • Lots of space
  • Lots of bandwidth
  • Many advanced features
  • Nice control panel
  • Friendly support

Cons:

  • Email hosting is not reliable (Let Google host it)
  • Uptime could be better (They had some major problems last year, but things are much better now.)
  • Export Ensemble extension does not work with Dreamhost.

I have basically the same thoughts and experience as MrBlank. I’ve used them for my personal and smaller sites for years (the price is unbeatable for what you get), and rarely have issues with uptime. The addition of hosted Google apps and Gmail into the mix makes this a great way to Gmail host your e-mail alongside your Symphony installation.

Worth a look if you’re on a budget!

Unfortunately, I can’t really recommend Dreamhost. They do have nice services. When their servers are up, most of the time their servers are fast and are filled with nice features. But, my experience with them has been more trouble than it has been good. I found their support lacking and the community to be not overly helpful. Maybe it was the two or three servers I happened to have been on, but my experience is that Dreamhost is pretty much a crapshoot. If you happened to be put on good server that has a good uptime, you should be OK, but outside that you’ll end up with what I got.

A little difficult to setup at first in order to get a proper php configuration going, but their services are fast an reliable afterward. It did take a custom php build to be installed to get ZIP in order to export ensemble.

Had the site for a few months now and haven't noticed any downtime. Also the server is able to handle demanding script request (ie, using JIT to manipulate a lot extremely large images).

I like Dreamhost, I have a Shared Server Plan user since 2006, never had high problems. Maybe I will test VPS in couple months, it's interessting that can "Turn On" on painel and choose the domain to migrate to VPS.
