Should the DS do the 404-redirect-dance?
Yes it should. It is not just entries that have been removed. Any invalid discussion thread ID will produce the same thing.

Blah, this is so minor it’s not worth having open. There are more important things.
This issue is closed.
When removing an unwanted entry, the URL still works but loads a broken-looking page. Should the DS do the 404-redirect-dance?
e.g. <http://www.getsymphony.com/discuss/thread/34377/?
