is there any extension out there, that can set the status field (select box let's say) from active to inactive based on End date, (date field) ?

Not that I know of, but the usual method of doing it is to just have the date field.

The expiration would be how it is output in the datasource, and filtering a date field to not show entries where the date is less than now, for example.
