Getting this error when submitting through the built in contact form.

However, it does send me an email notification, and adds the message to my symphony admin.

Hmm, interesting. That function is called 3 times in the event.section.php file, yet that function was never created. That is supposed to be a utility function for easily creating Event messages/errors. The line you are referring to is the "Success" message. Ironic hey.
