This issue has been fixed in fork of git repo at http://github.com/thadd/edit_area. I have sent a pull request to incorporate back into main repo, but if you want the fix feel free to clone my fork.

So... your "fix" breaks this for every version of Safari between 3.2 and 5.0.1?

Using Safari 5.0.1 on Mac, I get a text shadow behind the editor that makes it very difficult to read the text.
