While researching a bit more on that topic, I discovered that even FuelPHP (which is a quite lean and well written framework in my opinion) is replacing its own query builder with DoctrineDBAL in the upcoming version.

I guess they wouldn't do this without having very good reasons, so maybe this stuff isn't really that trivial after all.
